for the cake

  • 3/4 cup dutch-processed cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulate sugar
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cups vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cups dark stout, such as Guinness*
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

for the frosting

  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-4 tablespoons milk (this will depend on the consistency of your peanut butter. start with 2 and work up)

for the ganache/everything else

  • 1/2 cup bitter- or semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • a few large pretzels
  • 1 Snickers bar
